BRENDON DRAKE

MANAGING DIRECTOR;  VIRTUAL MARKETING DEPARTMENT

This year, Mr Drake expanded his strategic growth-marketing consultancy, Virtual Marketing Department (VMD) with the launch of two new innovative retail selling tools: Talking Travel and Talking Money Matters. He has over 20 years' commercial marketing experience in Tier-1 publicly listed companies operating in travel, finance and other highly competitive retail markets. This includes the Commonwealth Bank, RAMS, American Express, Vodafone, Franklins, Traveland and Accor as well as holding senior marketing and business development roles at Allianz Australia Insurance, ACE Insurance and APN Outdoor.

Mr Drake launched VMD in 2006 as a consultancy, and due to the high demand for its services, became an incorporated business in 2008. In the past two years he's worked across projects for clients including Harris TV Technology - where he identified a new $100m market, co-ordinating the business case and pilot roll-out plans; portable water filtration company, AquaSafe Corp - where he developed its B2B and B2C marketing, TV retail and eCommerce for the US and local markets; and Finnesse GT - for which he restructured its distribution along with designing and executing the company's marketing strategy. 

Before establishing his own company Mr Drake's experience was in the corporate sector, holding senior executive positions in a diverse range of   leading global   sales organisations.   From 2006-2008, Mr Drake was general manager, direct distribution, of ACE Insurance, a company with $62bn in assets across 50 countries. Here he worked with major credit card providers to value-add new products, expand and diversify channels, ensure efficiency, profitability, growth and compliance.

Prior to this, Mr Drake spent two years at APN Outdoor as the Australia and New Zealand marketing director, helping to reposition the company after the merger of four separate but well known companies (Cody, Australian Posters, Buspak, Taxi Media) created a new market leader and growth opportunity. He grew percentage media share by restructuring the sales force around industry segments and drove $400m worth of successful tender wins.

Mr Drake joined APN from Allianz Australia Insurance, a company with an insurance premium capacity of $1.6bn, where he worked as group marketing head from 1999-2004. For five years he drove the marketing strategy of the insurer's B2B and B2C intermediate and direct channels. The first decade of Mr Drake's career was spent as an account director in major advertising agencies.
